The book starts with an introduction by artist John Romita in 2006. He talked about some of origins of issues 68-77. He also told how Marvel Super-heroes # 14 was reprinted with unused story by artist Ross Andru. It was a trial run to see if Ross could get the hang of drawing Spider-Man. Ross did such a great job that soon after began to draw Spider-Man for five years in 1970’s. The stories though in 68-77 talked about mysterious stone tablet with hieroglyphics writing that was impossible to read. The Kingpen wanted tablet to figure out secret. This story line went through several issues. The secret is figured out by Doctor Connors (The Lizard’s alter-identity). There are appearances by The Shocker. The secret of tablet is found out by a man called Silvermane. He was one of the last of the legendary old-time leaders of criminal organization called MAGGIA. What happens to Silvermane when takes potion made from deciphering tablet by Doctor Conner’s. The potion was not tested. The old man Silvermane had awful result from untested formula.
J. Jonah Jameson was put in hospital. Spider-Man confronted him. He boldly asked why Jonah had such a vendetta against him. Jonah collapsed in shock.
The Lizard was at end of issue 75 and fully in issues # 76 and 77. Spider-Man had lots of battles in Marvel Masterworks “The Amazing Spider-Man # 8”. I think one of my favorite covers for The Amazing Spider-Man is issue # 77 which also starred The Human Torch.
I got Marvel Masterworks The Amazing Spider-Man # 8 from inter-library loan. It actually came from Grace A Dow Memorial Library from Midland Michigan. My next volume of The Amazing Spider-Man # 9 came from Texas A and M university. Amazing can get with request and not have to pay lots of money for original issues. I also did not have to travel to Michigan or Texas to get volumes. I was really impressed with color art in volume 8.
