I found this to really interesting take on Grimm Fairy Tales told in present tense mixed in with old Grimm stories. I needed to find better history of Dr. Sela Mathers.
According to end of book there is an introduction to Sela Mathers. This is what said on page 366.
Sela Mathers is the main character of Grimm Fairy Tales and the essential thread that ties each issue together. She is a beautiful and mysterious professor with the unique ability to transport those she chooses into the Fairy Tale world in order to teach lessons in mortality. However Sela is certainly not an angel herself and has always been willing to dish out punishment when she deems it necessessary. In later issues Sela must face some demons of her own and make a choice that will affect the lives of many.
Sela made her first appearance in issue # 2 and many have asked the question why she was absent from issue # 1. One theory suggests that we didn’t think of Sela until issue # 2. This isn’t true, we knew Sela would make her appearance as sort of the Fairy godmother figure in Cinderella and we knew she was going to be a recurring character.
However, the depth of Sela was only fully realized while writing the first few issues of the series. The entire backstory became very clear early on and gave us a whole added dimension to work with in creating the series.
Now we couldn’t imagine GRIMM FAIRY TALES without our gorgeous professor.
Allen’s thoughts.
I enjoyed how Sela brought in people to read various stories for each of them like Snow White, Cinderella, Jack and the Bean Stalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, Sleeping Beauty, Goldie Locks & and the Three Bears, The Frog King, Bluebeard, The Pied Piper, The Robber Bridegroom and several other Grimm stories.
Many of the stories were told as lessons to person reading pages involving situations comparing to something about to do. For example, two kids running away from home might get story Hansel & Gretel.
There were lessons to be learned by each person reading Grimm Fairy Tale. Various people learned how to change lives due to story. Other had rather tragic ends like person in real life that tried to poison daughter. This was linked to wicked witch in snow white that gave girl poisoned apple. Lady in present day did not learn lesson in real life. She met rather gruesome end.
I found stories sometimes rather disturbing. I felt had rather Twilight Zone or Amazing Stories TV atmosphere. I did like though how learned some history in series to Sela’s origin.
Try library for this graphic novel. Grimm Fairy Tales volume one & 2 is probably out of print.
ISBN # 0-9786874-4-2
Jack and Jill, Old Woman in a Shoe, Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater, Little Boy Blue, and Pinocchio, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf were even wrote about in Annual One. These stories were not like ones told in regular Grimm Fairy Tale stories.
The cost of hard cover book was $ 39.99 USA and 46.99 Canada. There were various artists and writers for series. I think teen to adult. More like PG – 13.
Page 365 has Grimm Fairy Tale comic book covers from issues 1-12. Also shown are all variant covers.
