Movie is based on a true story. The movie was not a blockbuster like new Spiderman movie. The movie Joe Bell only made 1.7 million dollars in theaters. It had very important true story told in hour and half. Joe Bell was father of teenage son Jadin Bell. Jaden was gay. His father nor anyone could change how Jadin felt about how he had feelings. He even became a cheer leader for football team and was on cheer leading squad as only male person. The setting was small Oregon town. The problem with this was many classmates and citizens in community did not accept Jadin's sexuality.
The story goes back and forth revealing way classmates bullied Jadin. He almost needed secret identity. There was a terrible situation due to bullying. Jadin's father decided he needed to heal. He tried to walk from Oregon town to New York. Jadin always wanted to go to New York City. Along the way Joe Bell gave talks about bullying. He learned how to better accept his son being gay.
This was really heart-breaking movie. I will not tell end. I did though have tears in my eyes.
Movie has rather adult themes.
It is not like bullying has not been present for long time.
I was also reading old issues of Spiderman in Masterworks volume one. This contained Amazing Fantasy origin story of Spiderman. Peter Parker was picked on by classmates for being book worm and teachers' pet. When Peter was bit by radioactive spider had costume to not reveal identity. I think Jadin Bell wished he had secret identity. It was awful how people treated him. His dad Joe Bell did not even allow him to practice cheer leading in front yard. Jadin was told to practice in back yard. Joe Bell did not want anyone seeing his son practice with another girl cheer leader in public. His Mother and father even left football game when Jadin was cheering for football team during game. He was crushed by little support just because he was gay.
The demons of those memories haunted Joe Bell as he was on walking journey to help prevent bullying.
