His sisters end up marrying three wizards, while he leaves his home in search of them.
He meets Marya Morevna, a beautiful warrior princess, and marries her. Because she is a warrior, she announces she is going to go to war and tells Ivan not to open the door of the dungeon in the castle they live in while she will be away.
Overcome by the desire to know what the inside of the dungeon holds- he opens the door soon after her departure and finds Koschei himself, all chained up.

So terrified to die was Koschei that he cast a spell upon himself to prevent his death, thus guarantying at least some sort of eternity.
Then, it is explained well, that due to his fear he wasn't able to avoid tragedy.

For the reason that Ivan was who freed Koschei from Marya's prison in the first place, albeit unwittingly (by giving Koschei water). Wiki Russia
Adam & Eve for the sin of disobeying the laws governed for their realm, bit into the seed of immortality by one way or another- forever changing the theme of time.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_sin
The original sin is known as betrayal.
"Original sin is the Christian doctrine that holds that humans, through the fact of birth, inherit a tainted nature with a proclivity to sinful conduct in need of regeneration."
Genesis 3 (the story of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden), in a line in Psalm 51:5 ("I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me")
Paul's Epistle to the Romans, 5:12-21 ("Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned").
1901–1902
The opera was composed during 1901–1902 and the work was completed in 1902.
Judaism does not see human nature as irrevocably tainted by some sort of original sin...
Apostle Paul Adam's act released a power into the world by which sin and death became the natural lot of mankind. While, early forms of Christianity had no specific doctrine of original sin prior to the 4th century, while in the 2nd century evidence suggested inspiration by this theory.
"The authors of the Didache, the Shepherd of Hermas, and the Epistle of Barnabas, all from the late 1st or early 2nd centuries, assumed that children were born without sin."
