I bought issue # 9 of The Gift. I liked how story was dedicated to younger versions
of our selves. It is easy to forget what life was like during high school. Parties, groups associated
with during high school. The comic was in Back issue box I was really mad at police officer Bill. He did not take time to verify drug runner was actually in house kids were having party. Senro Lupi was not even at location.
I felt really sad. I recalled days of my youthful rebellion. My friends were my choice. I never did drugs like in “Corrupt” story.
I saw way too many sad days from seeing others use drugs and alcohol.
It would have been easy for me to slip into world of drugs.
All her friends had died. Enoch offered Vannie chance for her to have vengeance.
I was shocked by method of vengeance. I cried when Kirk was shot.
It was hard to emotionally handle Kirk’s death. He was innocent.
I was glad some retribution could be given by The Ancient One.
In few fleeting moments all her friends at house perished. Vannie was suddenly running for her youthful life.
It is probably wrong to believe there is any limit to terror there is any limit to terror which human mind can fathom. How much pain and suffering can a human mind cope with before sanity breaks down completely. What ran through Vannie’s mind before she accepted Enoch’s gift?
Was he a stalker? Was he an Angel? What’s with the green glowing eyes? Her mind fighting to maintain a wakeful unrelenting sanity towards deaths. Vannie fought hard to cope with death of her friends'.
I was shocked by result of Vannie taking Gift. It was choice which tested Vannie’s sanity. Taking Gift of joint and claim vengeance.
She was in a living breathing nightmare, black and cold, terror begets more terror. She really had no choice. Vannie claimed vengeance in way which I had never seen before in comic book publication.
Cover image gave hint to what would happen to Vannie after accepting The Ancient One’s Gift.
Vengeance did not really change fact that her friends were dead. Not really balancing scales of right and wrong. I could imagine fear and horror police officer felt when seeing appearance of smoke spirit. Bill must have thought girl was a ghost. Full moon was even in background scene. I wonder if Vannie smelled like a joint? Police officer Bill might have thought girl kissing him was nothing more than a smoke hallucination. Death for officer was quick. I am still stunned by way smoke made explosive death for Bill.
Other officers must have died in same way. I may neverforget image of Bill’s final moments.
I really felt loss of youthful lives in last cemetery scenes. I recognized bitterness as ground had already claimed her friends. Her visit to graveyard brought back memories of possible future for lives gone from Earth. Her friends which should still be a live enjoying life departed. Trees in cemetery had look of death. Tree branches vacant of leaves. Some dead leaves floating in wind.
I was very furious. I learned Enoch could have stopped deaths.
I know he is old. I know about biblical references to Enoch. I felt bitterness since he could have stopped terrible deaths of Vannie’s friends.
I have heard it said many times: There is a Reason. The Ancient One has to work a fine balance between good and evil. I know not everything is clear to my human eye. There is a Reason. I thought Vannie had every right to slap the Ancient One. Her testimonial to have revenge on him was warranted. I also noticed Enoch quickly vanished. Where he went, I do not know.
The story of The Gift was told in 14 issues. I think Raven Gregory was going to write more issues but got caught up being publisher at another comic book company.
I found this quote at comic vine website:
The Story So Far... The mystery of The Gift continues as the Ancient One has chosen the latest bearer to receive one of his "gifts"—items with extraordinary powers that are given to normal everyday people Some have used them for good, while others have used them selfishly for their own twisted desires. But even others have used them for nothing more than survival. But even though these "gifts" seem to be given randomly... everything is not as it seems.
Last issue, the line between reality and fantasy blurs in the world of THE GIFT. A struggling writer learns firsthand the price of following one's dreams. Slowly, he loses everything that matters to him. It is while moving through this empty existence that he finds himself face-to-face with his own creation. Confronted by the Ancient One, the writer is given a gift unlike any other—the gift to switch places with his dead son and to give what really matters—another chance. We left the writer with a single thought hanging in the air... "How will it all end?"
