“Baggage” story in issue # 11 delved deeper into the mystery of “The Ancient One.” I was surprised to see story started in Minnesota.
I noticed RAV-GIFT license on Matthew Lang’s car. Cold winter setting made location seem like wise choice. Bitterness and cold consumed Matthew Lang. His wife cheated on him with affair. The Gift can appear as many things. This time Enoch gave object in form of snow flake. Choices of right and wrong are always given to person receiving The Gift. Matt chose revenge. I imagined his wife was frozen to point that right leg had to be amputated.
I wondered about secret base in Nevada. I felt sad seeing flashback of Matt’s first meeting of General Paine. Battle of Black Lake was vicious. I shivered in horror when Matt looked back from helicopter at all the dead bodies.
War had cost many individuals precious lives. Many dog tags would not be collected.
I knew General Paine was aware of others that noch had given Gift. I noticed monitor screens in General Paine’s office. I recognized Ervin Green. I once read on Image message boar d that Ervy Green and his brother had been taken in by state. After the events of issue # 3 their mother has a nervous breakdown. I wondered if man in top right screen was Anthony Freeman. Person in lower right corner is mystery.
I was surprised General had devices to track Enoch. I noticed photo in file of Enoch. The Ancient One seemed aware and allowed photograph to be taken.
I never expected Matthew to lose sight of Enoch as target. I knew Enoch could materialize
in different places. A couple prime examples happened in past is sues. The Ancient One appeared in Dawson Elementary School bathroom.
I noticed this back in issue # 5. Another example was when Enoch was on splash page in issue # 8. Father holding child Jaylon as Enoch stood behind chair I did not expect Enoch to resort to trickery. One second in gun sights next vanished onto rooftop that Matthew was using as sniper point. Enoch recognized he was target. I felt this was similar to Enoch knowing his photo was being taken. Key difference thoughh was that he would not allow himself to be killed. I really do not think Enoch would have been hurt by bullet.
Matthew never comprehended that Enoch gave Matthew choice to use cold power:
Choose wisely. Not all choices can easily be reversed.
Matthew chose to freeze General Paine’s men. He chose to look back at dead bodies back at Battle of Black Dog Lake. Coldness of war brought anger.
Incident with wife sent him over edge of sanity. It was easier to blame others than face up to errors. I really thought Enoch would take away cold Gift. I wondered how often Enoch used deception to stop person from misusing Gift? I also wonder what Death has planned for Matthew Lang?
I appreciate effort that Richard Bonk did with pencils of issue # 11 of The Gift.
I even took time to read The Gift Rap letters pages.
I instantly went back to my collection of "Midnight Nation" comics. Renae, I noticed editor Renae Geerlings had her picture with Joe Novak was in issue # 9.
I also noticed insightful letter by Richard Vasseur. Richard had been also doing great job promoting
The Gift comic over here at Jazma.
The comic series ran for 14 issues. This $ 2.99 comic book was not collected in trade paperback format.
