This book is more of satire. It picks fun of all sorts of things in DC Universe. A few examples are alternate earth stories, how stories fit into time lines. I never really found out origin of Ambush bug. It was clear that he knew was comic book character. The stories were not related to others in DC Universe. I did not really enjoy character Ambush Bug. Once in while characters like Batman or Wonder Woman would make appearance but only as mention. Keith Giffen was artist. Robert Loren Fleming was scripter. I never really had much feeling of enjoyment reading Ambush Bug. I think in this genre of stories really hurt that black and white format. The book is 478 pages long. I would suggest getting from library. The stories told in Ambush Bug are more adult oriented. I would caution readers to read couple issues just to get feel for character. Ambush Bug will probably have limited demand. I was surprised to see 2009 edition selling for much higher than cover price.
Here is what back cover says about Ambush Bug:
Join the Ambush Bug Fan Club!
Just by purchasing the finely crafted, monstrous volume of compressed wood pulp and bleaching chemicals (and imagination!), you will be inducted as an honorary member of the Ambush Bug Fan Club!
For a one-time fee you get the compleat, unadulterated history of the Bug a.k.a. Irwin Schwab, a.k.a. Amber Butane of the Amber Butane Corps! He's only the greatest hero EVER... to feature Superman, Batman and Wonder woman on the cover of his one and - we promise - only Showcase Presents volume. Not even that punk Booster Gold could get the Big three for this kind of publicity!
Face it! This is as close to the ABSOLUTE AMBUSH BUG as your going to get! He teleports into mischief and hijinks, and he's never going to save the world - but why would you ask him to? It's only right that you hold him to the high standards as Keith Giffen, Robert Loren Fleming, Bob Oksner and the other fine folk who put pen to paper and make this magic happen.
