I think best way to review this movie is that it is a musical drama. I never saw in theater. I spotted DVD at library. I was glad to see J.K. Simmons as Henry Sawyer. His wife in movie named Helen Sawyer was played by Cora Seymour. They were parents of Gabriel Sawyer who was played by Lou Taylor Pucci. The movie is based on a true story. The story starts off in 1986. Helen Sawyer receives a telephone call saying that her son Gabe has been located after 20 years on the road. There had been no communication between Gabe and his parents for all that time.
The story tells how Gabe who is now in 30's as of 1986. Gabe had brain tumor. He lost ability to do most of cognitive thinking relating events in history. He did manage to get back memories from some of the years in 1960's. This relationship happened when albums were played in rock and roll form. It was as if Gabe could recollect many instances from time period from 20 years ago.
The movie brought out thoughts how Vietnam shaped lives of youth in 1960's It also talked about how Father and son had trouble communicating which each other. Music brought Father and son back together through music like The Grateful Dead. Gabe seemed to really respond to songs from Bob Dylan and many other groups from that time period. He would turn off mentally when music was turned off from phonograph or cassette tape. The movie was very inspirational. The movie though was not very well received in theaters.
I did think very worthwhile movie to watch on DVD.
